Lenka ticket used in video

This is the ticket used at the end of my music video. I used it to show that she was given a ticket to her own show. I used this idea, to show confusion in the music video, which is a theme through out and as she performs on stage, it is part of the show that she is given this ticket for.

Music poster research Kate Nash

Kate nash has gone for a simplistic poster, I have conituned the theme of changing the artist to contrast with the background. This is the poster I got my ideas from for my digipak. The poster is simple, but elegant, I wanted to continue this theme but add a playfulness to my poster to fit in with the artist and song.

Music poster research Lily Allen

I chose this as an example as I analysed Lily Allen's music video. Her poster has a retro theme showing the genre of her music. The poster has a pattern that covers the poster with the artist's name in bold quirky writing.

Digipak research 2

This digipak has gone for a vibrant and colourful theme, which promoted the artist in a different way according to the genre of music. The bold colours and font make the music stand out and show the quirky side of the artist, which is different to the digipak of Jennifer Lopez.
The artist still has a lot of eye contact with the camera, as there are a lot of close up shots of the artist eyes and different features of their faces. Although the digipak is bold, it has gone for a simple, but eyecatching look.

Digipak research 1

As I have to create my own digipak for my music video, I did some research into digipaks. This is one for a female solo artist Jennifer Lopez, her music is a different genre to my artist Lenka, but I like the contempory layout of her digipak and the pastal colours that have been used.
The font styles that have been used are simple and some what child like, which I think fits the theme of my artist, as the music is playful and I have continued this theme over to my digipak.
On all of the digipaks, include a bar code and copyright logos. I have used this digipak cover as an example to mine, to make sure I include all the relevant information. The artist has eye connection with the camera, which makes her connect with the audience. Her smile makes her seem inviting, reltable and a happy person, which promotes her music and her digipak.

Location and setting for music video

These are some ideas for location shots for my music video. I have incorporated the idea of a maze, which shows the idea of being lost and confused. The word 'maze' is also used several times in the chorus of the song. The song is called 'The Show' so I wanted to show the artist performing what appears to be a show, but not at a music perfomance level. I went for a simplistic idea, to promote the artist through the music video. I want to use a stage in the video, as the curtains open onto 'The Show'. I have used pictures of flowers and park scenes to show the simplisity and nature that I wanted to incorporate into my music video.

The talent

These are the three people I considered for my music video, they all have dark hair and an innocence that I wanted to capture in my music video. They all look similar to Lenka and would suit the music video that I want to create. I want to dress the artist in florals and I think they suit the criteria and fit the artists voice and simple, indie genre of music.

Case study: Anton Corbijn

He started out as a photographer from the Netherlands for the NME, he took photographs of bands and singers and was then asked to direct a music video by Palias Schaumburg. His first video was Dr. Mabuse. Front 242 were impressed by Antons artwork and they asked him to shoot a 'headhunter' video, which due to his little understanding of the enlgish language, he understood as 'egghunter' which resulted in a very abstract video, that was a huge leap in his career. His videos became very abstract, by including 'a walking fat woman with wings' in the Nivana video. He became famous through the absract videos he created for varios bands. He understands the music and message and translates it into imagery.

Bernard (Joy Division) - 'A music video can be seen as a creative tool, rather than a promotion tool for record companies.'

Stop animation

This is an example of stop motion animation that caught my eye by Lenka called 'The Show'. I chose this song for my music project video and have shown a take that someone has had on the song. This works well with the song as the singer has a sweet voice and the songs innocence and simplicity is projected in the stop motion animation video.

Lenka - 'The Show'

I'm just a little bit caught in the middle
Life is a maze and love is a riddle
I don't know where to go I can't do it alone I've tried
And I don't know why

Slow it down
Make it stop
Or else my heart is going to pop
'Cause it's too much
Yeah, it's a lot
To be something I'm not

I'm a fool
Out of love
'Cause I just can't get enough

I'm just a little bit caught in the middle
Life is a maze and love is a riddle
I don't know where to go I can't do it alone I've tried
And I don't know why

I'm just a little girl lost in the moment
I'm so scared but I don't show it
I can't figure it out
It's bringing me down I know
I've got to let it go
And just enjoy the show

The sun is hot
In the sky
Just like a giant spotlight
The people follow the sign
And synchronize in time
It's a joke
Nobody knows
They've got a ticket to that show
Yeah

I'm just a little bit caught in the middle
Life is a maze and love is a riddle
I dont know where to go I can't do it alone I've tried
And I don't know why

I'm just a little girl lost in the moment
I'm so scared but I don't show it
I can't figure it out
It's bringing me down I know
I've got to let it go
And just enjoy the show

Just enjoy the show

I'm just a little bit caught in the middle
Life is a maze and love is a riddle
I dont know where to go I can't do it alone I've tried
And I don't know why

I'm just a little girl lost in the moment
I'm so scared but I don't show it
I can't figure it out
It's bringing me down I know
I've got to let it go
And just enjoy the show

dum de dum
dudum de dum

Just enjoy the show

dum de dum
dudum de dum

Just enjoy the show

I want my money back
I want my money back
I want my money back
Just enjoy the show

I want my money back
I want my money back
I want my money back
Just enjoy the show

How far do music videos reflect popular culture of the time?

In the music industry there is such strong competition for who will have a number one hit or the most watched music video. This can depend on genre to the lengths that artists go to, to recieve attention. Genre based music channels have a competivness to stand apart from what is typically the average music video.
Music videos have changed from when they started to be made, they were used for a different reason other than to promote an artists or bands image. It was a regular occurance that artists could not appear live and a music video was made to stand in there place instead. An example of this is Bob Dylan's, Subterranian Homesick Blues that consited of a man holding up pieces of paper wth the key words in the song. This was more promotion for the artists song and voice, other than his image. However, music videos began to play a key part in promotion for the artists image and this reflected the culture and most importantly genre that started to become more extremely individual and competitve.
Scopitones
Scopitones are the most prime example of the reflection of music videos, although they were mostly popular in France and the first scopitone was made in France (1960) the popularity spread throughout europe and were played on scopitone jukeboxs in resurants and cafes that could afford them. An example of this is Antoine - Les Elcubrations which was made in France in 1966. This reflected how simple the culture was at the time and how important the music was to the artist. However, the film industry has changed dramatically and scopitones are hardly reconised anymore. Todays culture thrive for attention and the competive industry struggle to get attention by trying to be as individual as possible and break conventions in music videos. The music videos now shown on such music channels as MTV and The Hits would be considered vulgar in the 60s, but are becoming more acceptable to todays generations. More explicit videos are appearing on television and the promotion of an artists image is becoming more important and they have to exceed bounderies to be noticed.
It has become more important for female artists to be beautiful and have a nice figure. The more they undress in a video, the more popular they become with consumers and are considered an amazing talent. Music videos are making this focus on both genders of artists, especially male solo artists that can have a negative effect on the future generations and raise the bar of having the most explicit music videos. An example of both of this is 50 cent featuring Olivia shows the vulagirty of both the genders. The lryics even include 'I'll take you to the candy, I'll let you lick my lollipop' This shows that generally, lyrics influence the content of the music video, especially lyrics of a hip hop genre.
